Medicaid Expansion set for
Senate Committee on Education and Health
Chairman: Stephen D. Newman
Committee Members: Newman (Chairman), Saslaw, Lucas, Howell, Locke, Barker, Black, Carrico, Petersen, Cosgrove, Lewis, Dunnavant, Chase, Suetterlein, Peake
Date of Meeting: January 25, 2018
Time and Place: 8:00 AM – Senate Room A – Pocahontas Bldg.
Why? Because we believe that when all Virginians have access to affordable, accessible, and quality health coverage, our communities will thrive, families will be healthier, and our loved ones will have access to the care they need.
In less than twelve hours, three Medicaid expansion bills will be up for consideration by the Senate Committee on Education and Health: (S.B. 158 Support), (S.B. 282 Support), (S.B. 572 Oppose; please see previous action alert for HAV’s position on each bill).
As we prepare for tomorrow’s meeting, it is important for us all to remember that this is only the 1st quarter –or whatever “sportsball” metaphor you prefer– in our effort to ensure that nearly 400,000 Virginians have access to the coverage they need.
1. Lead with (and frequently return to) why Medicaid expansion is important; and
2. Keep your messaging short, simple, and positive. However, express any concerns you may have with a piece of legislation.
As a coalition, we will keep the drum beating, we will continue to lift up our voices on this important issue, so that in the end, more Virginians can thrive, grow stronger, and live healthier lives.
