OneVirginia2021 Call 16 February 2018
Companion bills x-crossed over between House & Senate. Have some hope that if/when passed that Gov Northam could add things to make even better. But unlikely since his main concern is Medicaid Expansion.
Senator Saslaw: has always criticized OneVA2021 saying that Democrats in VA General Assembly would be significantly reduced. However, Brian was able to speak to the Democratic Caucus. After Sen Saslaw remarked that “Brian is one of the smartest people he’s met on this issue aside from elected officials.” He appreciates that 1VA2021 doesn’t see this as a simple issue and understand redistricting on all levels
One member of Republican Caucus said that Health Care and Redistricting are the 2 issues that representatives have heard the most about. Elected officials are ready to talk because they know that it’s important to constituents. Brian believes 1VA2021 is effective because the members are well educated and informed. They know bills, they know structure they want. They can talk details.
Physical Presence requested:
- Feb 25 League of Women Voters of Fairfax, their Redistricting Forum with excellent speakers.
- March 1 OneVA2021 case in Supreme Court of VA. No cell phones but lots of room including overflow space. Will be very interesting. Important to have existing laws enforced
- March 4: 400+ have signed up to attend. Hippodrome Theater. Working to finalize speakers.
- get people connect, engaged and fired up 2) trained to be effective activists, give speech, talk/communicate with legislator 3) expand on lessons of local groups in NoVA and other area. Will be buses for the trip, especially from NoVA. Time is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from start to finish. Website: www.MarchForthVA.org. Want people to register. Brian will send out agenda. Still working on getting permits for the march. IF bad weather, will still have effective event in Hippodrome. Training is as important or more than the March. Target is more than 600 registrants. Plenty of parking at Hippodrome.
Thanks to everyone who participated in weekly Lobby days (by area of the state). Had well over 400 participants. Tuesday is for SW Contingent, the group that has to come the farthest. HB 1598 is on the Senate P&E Committee
Linda Garvelink, LWV-VA liaison, announced expected speakers at the League’s WLRT for Wednesday Feb 21: Sam Rasoul, Vivian Watts, Chris Piper. Always welcome 1VA2021 to share information during the WLRT.
OneVA2021 may get CU House for a debrief after the March 1 Supreme Court action.
