One Virginia 2021 Call – 13 April 2018
Legislation: This week, during the special session, 1VA2021 volunteers are urged to target their delegates and senators to encourage them to vote for the Governor’s amendments to SB106 & HB1598 (redistricting criteria). 1VA2021 is using the petition to encourage delegates and senators to support the bill. The Governor’s move was good progress but there is still more to go. He acknowledges that the bill falls short because it does not include the independent commission. Good first steps but still need the constitutional amendment. The Governor’s amendments do put communities of interest above jurisdictions, which is the wording of Del. Price of Newport News and the Black Caucus. Both Houses needs to accept the amendments to pass. Amendments and Vetoes will be considered on April 18.
Court Action: No update from courts. The Supreme Court’s decision will be in June. The Virginia Supreme Court action will likely come at the end of April or early May. Any remedies will not be put in place before the November elections.
