sample email: Dear Senator [name],
It’s important to add transparency and anti-gerrymandering language to SJ306 to insure maps are being drawn fairly.
After contacting your legislator, report your advocacy here.
SJ274 was defeated in the Senate P&E Committee on Tuesday. SJ306, an amendment sponsored by Senators Barker and Saslaw, could be a vehicle for reform if it is amended on the Senate floor to include transparency and anti-gerrymandering language such as:
Legislative and congressional districts shall not be drawn to favor or disfavor any political party, incumbent legislator or member of Congress, or individual or entity.
Meetings should be completely transparent with minutes and public-access to documents and at least three public hearings in different parts of the state.
Status: SJ306 will receive its final reading tomorrow on the Senate floor. This is our last opportunity to add transparency and anti-gerrymandering language.
Justification: SJ306 creates a commission comprised of 8 legislators and 8 citizens. Language needs to be added to deter the commission from producing an bipartisanly gerrymandered map.
Always keep our League policy in mind:
“Only the President or her designee is authorized to speak for the League.
However, we encourage all members to contact their public officials as individuals, whether or not they agree with a League position.”
