After consulting with LWVUS, the League of Women Voters® of Virginia is releasing the following statement:
The League of Women Voters of Virginia deplores and condemns racism in whatever guise it exists. Actions and attitudes that were accepted and tolerated in the past cannot be allowed to continue into the 21st century. We are deeply grieved by the disclosures of Governor Ralph Northam’s past, and while we do believe that persons can come to enlightenment and change their attitudes and behavior, it is impossible to erase the past. We recognize the implications of both remaining in office and resigning that office, and we believe that the Commonwealth will be more able to address the ongoing issue of racism if Governor Northam resigns.
